Ohio Star Quilters’ Guild Club Survey 2006 Compiled by Cathi Dix
At the June 2006 meeting of the Ohio Star Quilters’ Guild twenty, of the approximately 55 members, completed a survey. Not everyone answered every question, and sometimes more than one answer was given, so the numbers do not always add up to twenty.
1. How long have you belonged to the Ohio Star Quilters’ Guild? Five respondents have belonged one year or less, on up to two people who have been members for 24 years. 2. Are you also a member of NQA (National Quilting Association)? Sixteen respondents do not belong to NQA, four are members of NQA. 3. When it comes to quilt tops are you primarily a piecer or an appliquer? Eleven respondents primarily piece, five primarily appliqué, three said they do both. 4. When it comes to quilting do you prefer to hand or machine quilt? Eight respondents prefer to machine quilt, six hand quilt, five do both. 5. Do you work on one project at a time or do you have several in progress simultaneously? Seventeen respondents work on several projects at once. Two do one project at a time. 6. How many unquilted tops do you think you have? This ranges from one respondent who is working on finishing her first quilt top, to one who has over twenty unquilted tops, to a couple people who have stopped counting. Four people responded that they have zero unquilted tops. 7. What brand(s) of sewing machine(s) do you own? Seven respondents own Pfaff machines, six have a Bernina, five have Singers (not including Featherweight), and three own a Viking. Brands with at least two owners are Janome, Brother, Featherweight, and Gammill (long arm). Other brands owned include Necci and White. Adding that up, you realize that some members own more than one sewing machine. At least one embroidery machine and one serger were mentioned. 8. What is your favorite thread to piece with? Mettler brand and cotton were the most common responses to this question. Other brands mentioned include Tire (silk) and Gutermann. Quality and strength are important. One respondent uses light gray poly/cotton because it blends with everything. 9. What is your favorite thread to quilt with? Again Mettler brand and cotton were the most common responses. Gutermann and Superior were other brands mentioned. Quality and strength are important here, too. 10. What brand & fiber content of batting do you prefer to use? Nearly every respondent (9) uses cotton or batting that is mostly cotton (80/20). Brands mentioned include Warm & Natural, Hobbs, Comfort Loft and Quilters Dream. One reason mentioned for the cotton preference is that it doesn’t slide in machine quilting. Two respondents prefer polyester batting because it is easy to quilt. A couple respondents base their batting decision on the project and its intended use. 11. When starting a new project, where do you usually begin? Ten respondents usually begin with fabric. Three each use EQ5, a pattern, or a design wall. Books, design, and sketch in sketchbook were also mentioned as starting points. 12. What quilt activities do you enjoy participating in? Following each activity is the number of respondents who said they enjoy that activity. Challenge (10) Round Robin (5) Block of the Month (14) Fabric Exchange (8) Quilt Shows (12) Quilting Retreats (2)
13. Which have you never done, but would like to do? Challenge (3) Round Robin (4) Block of the Month (1) Fabric Exchange (0) Quilt Shows (0) Quilting Retreats (10) 14. What ideas do you have for future programs? Ideas mentioned were art quilt techniques, collage, using Angelina fiber, playing with patterns, new and different techniques, mystery trips, and Pat Krebs (Huron, OH) fiber arts. 15. When the well runs dry how do you recharge your creative spark? One person responded that this NEVER HAPPENS!! I highly suspect that she regularly incorporates all, or some, of what inspires other quilters, into her quilting life. Other members are recharged by looking in quilting and/or art magazines & books (9), seeing something at a quilt show (4), starting a project, getting together with friends to do a project, and networking with other quilters. One respondent calls Sue Haering. Another respondent is inspired by coming to a meeting to see everyone else’s Great works during Show & Tell. Whatever the means or media, we inspire one another! |
