Ohio Star Quilt Guild – NQA #131

May Newsletter 2008

Hello Fellow Quilters!

First, let me apologize for the lateness of getting this out.  I have had one of “those” months.  I promise to do better!

Best wishes to the following members who are celebrating birthdays in the month of May:  Sue Haering 5/4, Pat Jones 5/14, Mary Willson 5/14, Brenda Hollensen 5/17, and Sandy Erwin 5/30.

Best wishes to the following members who are celebrating anniversaries in the month of May:  Bobbie Sorg 5/1, Carol Swope 5/2, Pat Jones 5/21, Lorie Segaard 5/31, and Becky Johnson 5/31.

The April meeting was held on Thursday, April 23rd.  For the first hour or so we worked on making Stim Quilts.  The fabric was flying, the machines were whirring, and the irons were steaming.  Bonnie Legg will be giving us an update at the May meeting on precisely what we did accomplish.  She said to let her know if you’re interested in putting a top together, quilting, or binding a Stim Quilt.  Quilting a Stim Quilt is a great way to practice your machine quilting.  I hear the little ones who receive the quilts are not very judgmental and will NOT care if the quilting is perfect!

We passed around the updated roster list for a final double check before printing the copies for the new guild book (due out at the May meeting).

There were a few members that worked on attaching the binding on the Irish Chain Raffle Quilt.  It has really come together and the raffle quilt committee should get all of our “Kudos”.  De Masing assured us raffle tickets and a picture of the quilt will be available for everyone in May.  Let’s work especially hard ladies to sell those raffle tickets.  The quilt show is fast approaching.  The dates for the show are July 18-19.  A sign-up sheet was passed around for all to list the sizes of the quilts that each member is expecting to hang at the show.  The committee has five venders who will be setting up booths at the show.

For the May meeting, please come with some ideas for charities that you would like to see some of the proceeds from the raffle quilt go to.  We will be making this decision soon.

We finalized the change of our dues (from $15 to $30 a year) in our by-laws with a paper ballot.  Once again, it passed with an overwhelming margin with only two votes against.  The by-laws will be updated with the new addendum and will be included in the new guild roster book.

The Quilt Challenge Committee will be working on and getting us a new challenge for the year.  Let’s all make a concerted effort to be involved and complete this year’s challenge!

The Workshop Committee will also have an announcement at the May meeting for an upcoming event in June!!!

Pat Jones passed out her blocks for the block exchange group.  She is “cleaning out” and is using up what she has.  (Something many of us wish to be able to accomplish!) and she asked that everyone in the group make two very simple, snowball blocks.  She even had the squares cut out for everyone!

Upcoming dates of interest:

NQA Show in Columbus - June 19-21

Hayes Center – June 17-24

Ohio Star Quilters Guild Quilt Show – July 18-19

The hostesses for the May meeting (May 28th at 7:00 pm) are Peggy Waddington, Mary Ann Fitz, Barb Hanny, Cathi Dix.

The hostesses for the June meeting (June 25) are Beth Jadwisiack, Janet Lockhart, Carol Swope, Gabriele Beck, Betty Schlecht.

Take care and keep quilting!

See you all at the May meeting,

Kim Hirt
