July 2006
This month
we are spotlighting guild member
Sue Haering
Sue
designed the appliqué queen size quilt that will be raffled off in
October 2006. We posed these questions to Sue. Read her answers.
1. How did you
get started in quilting?
About 25
years ago I took a class at a quilt shop in Dublin OH. I made a sampler
piece with 6 blocks. Then I let quilting go for many years until I
moved into this area 14 years ago and joined this quilt guild.
2. What accomplishments are you most proud of?
Other than
my children, I made a small wall hanging art quilt in a David Walker
class at Quilt Symposium in Columbus. At the end of the class David
Walker wanted to buy or trade a piece of his work for my wall hanging.
I entered two wall hangings in an Art Show in the Lancaster Art
Festival.
I am also
proud of my king sized appliqué quilt. I started out hand appliqué and
ended up machine appliqué.
3. Have you ever placed one of your quilted pieces in a quilt show?
I entered
my wall hanging from the David Walker class in a Michigan Quilt Show and
ended up with 3rd place. The piece was titled: "Star Light Star
Bright".
4. Finish these sentences:
I still can't get the hang of . . .
machine quilting.
The biggest enemy of creativity is . . .fear.
5. What was your worst quilting disaster?
Not
washing the red fabric in the king sized appliqué quilt.
6. Which quilters work do you most admire and why?
Ruth
McDowell - she does realistic landscape and floral pieces.
Check out
Ruth's website to see why Sue loves her work:

Katie Pasquini - she takes photographs and breaks them up into large
geometric shapes to incorporate into quilts.

Katie's quilts at her website:

7. What creative endeavor do you plan to learn next?
Nothing
at the moment.
8. What advice would you give to someone starting out in quilting?
Learn the
basics. I have used all I learned in my water color artwork when I
started quilting such as color, value, and shapes.
