August 2007

  1. How did you get started in quilting?

My neighbor Becky Johnson talked me into taking a quilt class making mesh bags taught by Charlotte McNerney.  Charlotte knew she was in for trouble when I walked in and asked how to turn on the sewing machine.  That was 2 ˝ years ago.  The next class I took was a “Bull’s Eye Quilt” taught by Donna DiCarlo.  I made it king size and returned everyday for two weeks to the Nautical Needle to use their sewing machines to finish it.  Then I went out and bought a sewing machine!

  1. What accomplishments are you most proud of?

My “Four Seasons” quilt.  It is a crayon quilt that I did free motion stitching around every leaf and flower.

  1. Have you ever put one of your quilted pieces in a quilt show?

No, not a juried show.  Not yet.

  1. Finish these sentences:
    • I still can’t get the hang of . . .

Free motion quilting around feathers

    • The biggest enemy of creativity is .

Family, housework, and not having enough time.

  1. What was your worst quilting disaster?

Not sure I have one yet.  I had a near one – I made two twin quilts for my sister.  She gave me the measurements and when I finished with the binding, the quilts were not wide enough (I guess my sister has a measuring problem) so I added another border and binding on top of the binding I had already put on the quilts.  Then they were fine!

  1. Which quilter’s work do you most admire and why?

Pam Mostek.  She designs fabric and then designs quilts to showcase the fabric.  She has two books out called I Just Can’t Cut It and Dazzling Quilts.   Check out her website at: www.pamelamostek.com

  1. What creative endeavor do you plan to learn next?

I want to learn to design fabric, whether that is through paint, dye or inking my designs.  I will be attending a 3 day Fabrications Retreat  called “Composing on Cloth” in Michigan in the near future.

  1. What advice would you give to someone starting out in quilting?

Take as many classes as possible.  Talk and spend time with  other quilters to get the tricks and tips.
