Phyllis Coats
- How did you get started in
quilting?
Not really sure. I think it was because of
Mary Widmer and Dorthea Quillen
- What accomplishments are you
most proud of?
Having been able to make quilts for our 10
great grand babies! We have had 4 since November 2007 and one is due in
April 2008, so I am working on another one right now.
- Have you ever put one of your
quilted pieces in a quilt show?
Yes – I entered two at Sauder, but I have
never won any awards.
- Finish these sentences:
- I still can’t get the hang
of . . .
Putting strips together to make binding
- The biggest enemy of
creativity is . .
Not enough time – there are creations galore
hanging around here.
- What was your worst quilting
disaster?
A paper pieced item that when I started
quilting it, it came apart in the center. You really have to be careful
when ripping off the paper. You need to make sure the stitch is really
small.
- Which quilter’s work do you
most admire and why?
Annie Orr and Marie Webster. These are
both quilters from a long time ago. Some of their books are still
available. Some of Marie Webster’s work is being carried on by her
daughters.
- What creative endeavor do you
plan to learn next?
I have so much going on that I don’t want
to start anything right now.
- What advice would you give to
someone starting out in quilting?
Never start with a large project, that way you
will not lose interest and won’t get discouraged.
