Dictionary of Unusual Terms

Bearding – Batting fibers that work their way through to the top of the quilt.

Betweens - Needles used for hand quilting

Chain Piecing – (Fast Feeding) Process whereby patches are machine sewn consecutively without cutting the thread.

Continuous Line Quilting – A quilting design in which the design line keeps on going so you don’t have to stop and start in different places.

Even-Feed Foot (Walking Foot) – A presser foot attachment that feeds two or more layers through at the same rate. 

Fat Eighth – piece of fabric that measures 9” x 22”

Fat Quarter – piece of fabric that measures 18” x 22”

Half Square Triangles – The triangles created when a square is cut once diagonally from corner to corner.  The straight grain is on the short sides of the triangles.

Long Darners – Long, thin needles (size 7) used when basting a quilt.

On-Point – A block placed diagonally at a 45 degree angle within the quilt top.

Quarter Square Triangles – The triangles created when a square is cut twice diagonally from corner to corner.  The straight grain is on the long side of the triangles.

Quilt Sandwich – The three layers of a quilt, 1) quilt top, 2) batting, 3) backing

Quilt Sleeve – A strip of fabric attached to the back of the quilt during the finishing stage so a rod can be slipped inside to hang the quilt.

Rocker Quilting Stitch – A method of quilting where a needle is rocked back and forth through the three layers in a running stitch.

Sandpaper Marking Board – A piece of fine sandpaper attached to a board.  It grabs the fabric and holds it in place when marking it.

Sharps – Sewing needles used for hand piecing or appliquι.

Stab Stitching – A process where strips of fabric are sewn together, cut into segments, and resewn one or more times to create patchwork.
